TitlePapers of the Association for Improving the Condition of the Poor in Perth and neighbourhood
HistoryThe Association for Improving the Condition of the Poor in Perth and Neighbourhood was set up in 1875 largely under the instigation of Andrew Coates, manufacturer. The idea for the association had been taken from examples that Coates had seen in New York whilst living in America. On moving to Glasgow, Coates set up an association for the improvement of the poor based on the American model and when he later moved to Perth established one there. The objectives of the association were generally to improve the moral and physical condition of the poor and promote principles of self reliance. The society aimed to obtain accurate information respecting the condition and circumstances of the poor, promote combined action among the givers of charity, and stimulate the habits of temperance, industry, household economy, and the education of the poor. Pains were taken to distinguish between the deserving and the undeserving poor who were seen as being 'supported by impositions which they practice on the benevolent'. Grants were made to needy beneficiaries, some in kind such as groceries and food, lodgings were found, and coal was provided at half price. The association still continues today.
