TitleLumsden and Mackenzie Ltd, Bleachers, Huntingtowerfield (latterly Burt Marshall, Lumsden & Slater/Burt Marshall Lumsden Ltd/BML Ltd)
HistoryLumsden and Mackenzie Ltd. was a firm of bleachers based in Perthshire in particular at Huntingtowerfield. Huntingtowerfield was established as a bleachfield about 1774 and was one of three bleachfields on the river Almond. It underwent various changes of ownership but in 1814 Messrs William Turnbull & Son took over and built up an extensive business with an average 1.5 million yards of cloth whitened annually and a workforce of around 150. In 1869 Alexander Boswell Sandeman took over the ownership of Huntingtowerfield and continued in ownership until his death. David Lumsden of Fincastle bought Huntingtowerfield in 1882 from the trustees of Sandeman. He died in 1883 leaving bleaching operations at Huntingtowerfield, Pitcairnfield and Tulloch on the river Almond and at Stormontfield on the river Tay. The business carried on under the title of Lumsden & Mackenzie; as Lumsden’s son had gone into partnership with RWR Mackenzie of Carpow. In 1908 a Mr Robinson became a partner and in 1920 Captain David Lumsden, son to James Lumsden, joined the firm. A limited company was formed in 1930 and despite slumps the business carried on successfully. However the works at Stormontfield were destroyed by fire in 1971 and the firm amalgamated with Burt Marshall Ltd of Luncarty in 1972 who were involved in similar operations. The new firm was called Burt Marshall Lumsden and Slater to take account of the similar operations of the recently closed G and J Slater of Bolton. The 'Slater' was dropped soon afterwards. Due to rationalization Huntingtowerfield and Pitcairnfield were closed in 1982 and all operations transferred to Luncarty. Burt Marshall Lumsden or BML was sold to Dundee Textiles Ltd in 1996 and all operations ceased at Luncarty.
