TitleP D Malloch, Perth. Shooting and Fishing Agents, Sports Equipment, Taxidermists
HistoryP D Malloch was founded in Perth in 1875 by Peter D Malloch, a native of Almondbank. Initially it specialised in taxidermy and fishing tackle. Its most famous product was the Malloch Patent Casting Reel which was introduced in the early 1880s and revolutionised the art of spinning for trout and salmon. In 1928 the reel was further improved by the addition of a patent locking device. The firm carried on business in the High Street until 1898 when larger premises were acquired in Scott Street. Manufactures included reels, rods, flies and cartridge loading, with taxidermy and gun repairing carried out on a large scale. Later developments included a shooting and fishing agency. Malloch himself was widely known as a great angler and naturalist. When he died in 1921 at the age of 68 he left the business in the hands of four sons and a daughter. In about 1978 the firm left its shop and workshop at 24 Scott Street. The business is currently carried on at 259 High Street as gunsmiths and suppliers of fishing tackle.
