HistoryPerth Mechanics' Library provided library facilities to the working men of Perth. A small entry fee and 1d per week provided access to the 3000 books available by 1850. The library room was located in various parts of Perth over the years including 28 South Methven Street, 238 High Street, the Hammerman Hall at 175 High Street and finally at South St John's Place. On the opening of the Sandeman Public Library in 1898 the Mechanics' Library handed over its books and a gift of £50 to the Sandeman Bequest Committee.
