TitleCross Trust
HistoryThe Cross Trust was established in 1943 by Alexander (later Sir Alexander) Cross of Battleby House, near Perth. Sir Alexander was born in 1880, the second son of Sir Alexander Cross, a Glasgow industrialist and Liberal MP for the Camlachie Division of Glasgow, 1890-1910. After studying at Charterhouse and Balliol the younger Alexander became a barrister and a member of the Inner Temple. After service in the First World War with the Glasgow Yeomanry in Palestine he left the army with his hearing seriously impaired and did not return to his career as a barrister. In 1925 he rented and then later bought Battleby. He served as director of Scottish Agricultural Industries, was an active benefactor of the arts and a keen gardener. On the death of his elder brother, William, in 1947 he became the third baronet. A lifelong bachelor, he remained at Battleby until his death in 1963. The original aims of the trust were to make grants for the promotion among the youth of Scotland of a love of nature and Scottish scenery and to make grants to assist in the performance anywhere in Great Britain but especially Scotland of dramatic and operatic works deemed worthy by the trustees with particular emphasis on the plays of Shakespeare and the operas of Gilbert and Sullivan. Now grants are made to young people of Scottish birth or parentage in any recognised discipline including the visual and performing arts and music.
