TitleThomas Love and Sons
HistoryThomas Love moved to Perth in 1866 and set up business as a commission and insurance agent. He had diversified into auctions and sales of furniture by 1869 and in 1872 he obtained his auctioneer's and valuator's certificate. In 1871 he moved to an established grocery shop in Leonard Street and carried on the business until 1876. He moved into premises in St John's Place in 1875 and commenced business from there. The firm run by Thomas Love diversified from the very start encompassing cabinetmakers and upholsterers, auctioneers, appraisers, land measurers, and furniture warehouses. The premises in St John's Place proved too small and a gradual expansion began along St John's Place and later to Canal Street in purpose built premises. Thomas Love became a councillor on Perth Town Council in 1877 and was Provost between 1902 and 1905. Thomas Love died in 1909 and his son, Thomas junior, took over the running of the business. Tom Love, son of Thomas Love junior, took over the business in 1934. Further diversification resulted in the opening of a garage franchise in Perth. Elements of the business were gradually disposed of in the 1980s. The auction house at Canal Street was sold but still continues to trade under the title of Loves. In 2002 the company was still registered as active, with offices in Dundee.
